Nelmes What’s Happening in November! Grade 1 News Unit of Inquiry This month we will begin our new Unit of Inquiry ‘Celebrate!’ In this unit we will be focusing on these questions: *What do we celebrate? *Why do we celebrate? *How do we celebrate? *How are celebrations similar / different amongst people? The children have been discussing a number of celebrations in class. Please talk to your child about any celebrations that they know and any that they are less familiar with. Math This month the children will be looking at patterns in the 100’s chart. Please ensure that your child is able to write the numbers from 1 to 100 correctly. A fun game that you can then play with the 100 chart is to cover up some of the numbers and your child then has to guess what is missing. The children will also be counting and writing in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. The children will continue to work on addition and simple story problems. Writing As part of the unit, the children will be writing about various celebrations. The children will again be focusing on using capital letters and full stops correctly as well as focusing on the traits of ideas, organization and word choice. Handwriting is a big focus throughout the school this year so please ensure that your child is forming letters correctly and holding their pencil correctly. Reading The children should be reading every night as part of their homework program. It is important that your child understands what they are reading so once they have read the book, ask them to retell it in their own words. Also ask your child about the characters and the setting in the story.
